History

The company was founded in 1980, when two enthusiastic professionals in the metal industry began to consider whether their wings could carry them into entrepreneurship. Initially, they took on all kinds of evening and weekend jobs that came their way, mainly maintenance work for local companies. 

Then, in 1983, they became subtenants in facilities that allowed for full-time work. Their products were stainless steel tanks, which were manufactured as subcontractors for a local company. This continued for a few years, while they dreamed of finding their own product to improve profitability.

One day, a foreman from Huber came to the workshop in a panic with a small but troublesome problem during a shutdown at a paper mill. A cone was urgently needed, which was not available from standard suppliers. They had neither the tools nor the expertise to make it. 

Somehow, they dug up a sheet metal book to determine the shape of the cone blank. After some time spent drawing arcs with a compass, they thought they had it under control. Bending didn't go well either because they lacked the right equipment. The only thing they were sure they could do was welding. As a result, the outcome resembled more of an octagonal nut than a pipe cone. But since the client was in urgent need, it was accepted.

A few days later, the same foreman came back and asked them to make a couple more cones. This sparked the entrepreneurs' idea to research the market and, above all, to think about how they could be manufactured industrially. There was clearly a need for a flexible operator in the market, and manufacturing solutions developed quite quickly.

This visit from Huber’s foreman set in motion the company’s over 40-year lifecycle and development, which continues today as a leading supplier of pipeline components and extensive prefabricated parts. The company was long known as Painehitsaus Oy, but in 2010, for international clients, the name was changed to Prewel Oy.
